In Canada, we are not affected as greatly by acid deposition as other places are due to the fact that the Rockies between British Columbia and Alberta are made of limestone, which acts as a base and counters the acid.
The water cycle's role in acid deposition starts at the burning of fossil fuels and various metal ores that contain sulfur. As they are burned they release a poisonous gas called sulfur dioxide. Fossil fuels also release various nitrous oxides into the air. These rise into the atmosphere and mix with water droplets, creating acid rain. This can be very harmful to aquatic and terrestrial plants.
Nutrient Cycle
Water is able to absorb many nutrients, as well as carbon dioxide and oxygen, since water makes for an excellent solvent. Water in the soil is absorbed by plants. The plant is able to use the carbon dioxide and nutrients while releasing oxygen in the air. Animals can also access the nutrients by eating the plants containing it.
